Our Mission

Education plays a vital role in the lives of students and adults.  Many times students do not have the necessary information or assistance to enable them to make decisions that would engender success in their educational and career paths.  It is imperative as an educator that we prepare and motivate students to improve in reading and writing.  But more importantly, we are concerned about enhancing students’ abilities so it can serve as a means for maintaining a higher level of success.

Here at Miami Park Elementary School, the integration of literacy in daily instruction is our number one goal.  All reading classroom environments consist of Reading-Research Based materials that are utilized to provide students with a rich vocabulary and Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) instructional strategies.  Students are read aloud to daily.  There is an extensive library that includes books from different genres and perusing the room, provides students with an attractive and print rich community.

Other ways the integration of literacy takes place is through teacher-directed activities and small group tutorial.  The Houghton-Mifflin Reading-Research Based series provides students with daily lessons that begin with a teacher read aloud, then breaks down the different strategies and skills that will be covered on a given week.  The additional resources help to enhance the lesson or activity to give students a better understanding of that skill.

By using in-house weekly test, portfolios, and interventions such as: Soar to Success, Early Success, and Voyager A&D, the relevancy of learning is again increased.

The goal of improving student learning through innovative practices is at the heart of all professionals here at Miami Park Elementary School.

The Florida Reading Association

The International Reading Association was founded in 1956 as a professional organization of those involved in teaching reading to learners of all ages. Over the years, our focus has expanded to address a broad range of issues in literacy education worldwide. Whether your interest is research or practice, traditional print-based reading and writing or the “new literacies” of the Internet age, new readers or those acquiring higher level skills, we offer something for you.

The National Reading Panel. In 1997, Congress asked the Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), along with the Secretary of Education, to convene a national panel on reading. The National Reading Panel (NRP) was asked by Congress to assess the status of research-based knowledge about reading, including the effectiveness of various approaches to teaching children to read. The panel was made up of 14 people, including leading scientists in reading research, representatives of colleges of education, teachers, educational administrators, and parents. The NRP met over a period of two years to discuss their findings and prepare the results in two reports and a video titled, "Teaching Children to Read."

Starfall Where children have fun learning to read! The Starfall Method promises to improve reading acquisition by using the Internet to help make it fun for the children and easy for the educators. You may order the printed materials that go along with the website for classroom or home use.

The National Institute for Literacy's activities to strengthen literacy across the lifespan are authorized by the U.S. Congress under two laws, the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) in the Workforce Investment Act and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The AEFLA directs the Institute to provide national leadership regarding literacy, coordinate literacy services and policy, and serve as a national resource for adult education and literacy programs. The NCLB law directs the Institute to disseminate information on scientifically based reading research pertaining to children, youth, and adults as well as information about development and implementation of classroom reading programs based on the research.
